About the Cultural Competency Initiative

This book comes from the Cultural Competency Initiative (CCI). In order to advance a high level of cultural competency in nonprofit and other sector leadership, CCI offers practical approaches for honoring cultural identity. The focus is on promoting racial equity as well as intersections among identities. CCI generates awareness through online resources, conference sessions, and a series of publications online and in print. The purpose is to set standards of practice, facilitate peer dialogue, and provide training.

CCI was created by members of the People of Color Affinity Group from the Alliance for Nonprofit Management. Formed in 2001, this group offers a forum for capacity builders of color to share experiences and expand the presence of people of color in the field. Most important, the group serves to catalyze change in the nonprofit sector and ultimately the larger society.

By gathering people of African, Asian, Latino, Native/American Indian, and Arabic ancestry, the People of Color Affinity Group accelerates peer learning and challenges business as usual. Recognition, resources, multi-ethnic collaboration, mentoring, marketing, and partnership are tools for doing that. The group seeks to turn nonprofit capacity building into a force for progressive social change.
